Basically, the man’s been around the genre block a few times. Not to mention shows such as Outcast, American Gods, Westworld, and The Leftovers. He’s helmed films like Compliance, Z for Zachariah, and Blumhouse’s The Hunt. He’s a name you know as a horror fan – whether you know it or not. And let’s not forget Cailee Spaeny ( The Craft: Legacy) as a teenage single mother.Ĭraig Zobel directs all 7 episodes. Plus Julianne Nicholson as Winslet’s closest friend, Angourie Rice ( The Nice Guys) as Winslet’s daughter, and David Denman (Roy from The Office) as Winslet’s ex-husband. ![]() In addition to Kate Winslet and Evan Peters, the show sports Guy Pearce ( Prometheus) as Winslet’s new boyfriend and Jean Smart ( Fargo S2) as Winslet’s mother. ![]() Worth a watch, but I don’t get the praises of it being the best mystery show in years at all.One of the best aspects of the show is the killer cast. As a mystery, I think it had too many POVs, which made everything revolving around withholding information feel like an artificial way of stretching out the story. ![]() The first five episodes are pretty strong despite a reliance on tropes and cliches for the genre aspects, but the last two parts made it evident a lot of the story didn’t matter, with most characters and subplots disappearing during that stretch, despite most of the show prior to that revolving around them. It was decent, definitely elevated by the cast and Zobel’s direction, but I think it has too many structure and pacing problems to be considered great. So much of the finale revolving around John and Ryan also made the stakes and tension fall a bit flat, since they’re really not in the show much, especially Ryan. Similar issues with the junkie brother, the woman with cancer whose daughter goes missing, Guy Pearce being wasted, the kidnapper storyline feeling like a totally different show, and Zabel’s death being completely forgotten about. The daughter’s storylines, for example, go nowhere, and her relationship with Mare gets little attention/exploration, even though they tried by having her confess her anger at Mare in episode six over finding Kevin’s body, but that was too late to build that, not to mention it doesn’t lead anywhere in the end. There’s way too many red herrings, too much exposition of motives in this last episode (most of which doesn’t matter since it is lies), and too many characters/subplots. Ingelsby was clearly stronger at writing the relationship and character drama, but I think he struggled with the mystery elements. The show wanted to do an interesting mix of slice of life drama with a mystery plot, but I don’t think it entirely coalesced. You’re being downvoted for having an opinion separate from the hivemind (I don’t know why Reddit hates discussion in discussion posts.), but I agree. No, Lori would NEVER be given that fucking child. The woman is using the child to get at my friend and her BF. He only lived with this bitch for like 2 years but a judge forced him to let the son fly one weekend a month to visit her and spend one month every summer. A friend of mine is dealing with a nightmare of a crazy jealous woman who has visitation rights with my friend's SO's son from another woman (who is now dead). Whatever is in the best interest of the child is usually followed. No, Dylan's parents would have cake-walked through that custody hearing. Most people who have dealt with custody issues are going to know this a mountain of BS to drop on your audience in the last 30 mins of your miniseries. The writer decided that the most tragic thing for Lori to end up having to do was raise the child her husband fathered with his own niece with both him & her son in prison. It's funny looking at these comments and most just gloss over one of the most ridiculous things in the final episode. Synopsis: When her investigation takes a series of devastating turns, Mare's friends and family members process the fallout as she attempts to finally find her own way forward.
